Effective Treatment for Stretch Marks

What are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are indented streaks that run along part of the body. They are usually pink, red, or purple. Most often, they appear on the abdomen, breasts, upper arms, buttocks and thighs. Stretch marks are not a medical concern, as they cause no harm and usually fade in time. There is usually no need to consult a doctor. However, if you feel uncomfortable about your stretch marks, or if they cover a large part of your body, your doctor can help to diagnose the cause and discuss treatment options.

Causes

As the name implies, stretch marks are caused by the stretching  of the skin, coupled with an increase in the hormone cortisone, which may weaken elastic fibers. Stretch marks can be brought on by several causes. Pregnancy causes women to gain weight, thus stretching the skin; it also creates hormonal changes. Weight gain, either in fat or muscle, is a common cause of stretch marks. Medications, as well as certain diseases such as Cushing’s syndrome, can also lead to stretch marks.

Treatment

Stretch marks pose no medical threat and therefore require no medical treatment. However, many people have cosmetic concerns. While treatment can help to fade the appearance of stretch marks, they cannot remove them completely. If you do choose to treat your stretch marks, there are several options including creams, lasers and microdermabrasion.

Tretinoin Cream

Tretinoin cream can be used on marks less than six weeks old. It works by promoting the growth of collagen, which makes the marks look more like your normal skin. The cream however, can irritate your skin and is not effective on older stretch marks.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy stimulates the growth of collagen and elastin, thus remodeling the underlying layer. It is most effective on newly formed marks, but may still be effective on older stretch marks.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a treatment option for older stretch marks. During the process, tiny crystals are blown onto the skin to abrade the skin’s surface. The crystals are then removed, along with dead skin cells. This process gently removes your top layer of skin, with the new skin becoming more elastic.
